New Uses of the Internet

The first story is inevitable; people are going to blog about their divorces and the non-blogging partner is going to be upset.

The second one is more frightening and is part of what (I believe) the police were afraid of with the stolen car story: internet vigilantes, particularly when "we" might not believe the vigilantes have the right story/perspective/person.

What do you think of both of these stories?

The divorce article is one that I have heard before. The internet has helped people be able to let out their anger and frustrations in different ways. There is a website out there, I’m not sure of the name, that you can write about your ex-boyfriends and worn other girls about them. The internet is open to anyone, if you don’t want your personal life out their spot letting your spouse blog about it. The story of the student is scary. Every university put the student’s information out there for everyone to access. At UNCC you have to submit a signed consent to the college for them to take your information off the website. These students took harassment to a whole new level when they posted a map to her parent’s house with threats attached. Her parents are now in hiding because she tried to make students hear each other instead of fighting. She was doing the right thing which no one else seemed to be doing and is now paying for it because of the internet.

I think one can expect that with the increase of blog use...people are going to put all kinds of information about themselves out there. Divorce...what is more juicier to read than that. It probly helps those going through the process and the one who is writing about their experience. People shoudn't be embarassed over the things they do, in that they shouldn't worry about who writes about it. If you don't like what you are donig then change yourself...but don't be ashamed that it is a part of who you are, and potentially has the possiblity of getting written about.

In the second article it is awful what they did to that girl. People really should have thought about what could happen before going off on a rampage. I can see here why the police are concerned over the online activity. I think this article and the article about the stolen car are completly different. These are two completly different contexts. These people as Meg stated took harassment to a whole new level.

The article about divorce is something that has been going on forever, just not in places everyone in the world could be a part of. I think writing can be very helpful in situations like this but I don't think everyone thinks about the fact that these post will be our in cyber space forever. In addition, I don't agree with the statment the lady made about her childern won't care, yeah the internet is going to be a normal part of life but finding out that your parents divorced because of your (the child's) sickness online is not going to be a normal part of life.
The second article is kinda of scary. We are all entitled to our thoughts and bliefs but some extreme people believe otherwise. And these people took it to far and should have to be held accountable in some way, but that prob. won't happen.
But like Amanda, what it comes down to is that your actions are a part of you and if you don't want everyone knowing about it then you should make some changes because in today's world the minute after you screw up the whole world may know. They are even having segments on some news channels about the lastest "funny", "weird" , etc. stuff found online that day.
