For me, I think with the election being covered online is cool and all, but its sort of annoying that they are taking over the internet too. They already make a huuuuge deal about it on tv for almost an entire year, and now they are making it online as well. I think it is beneficial in that younger voters can learn about the issues and the platforms that each candidate has. I myself am very informed so far as to each candidate, but i'm not sure the movement toward you tube is really necessary.
I like that the nominees are moving to the Internet. I can understand your frustration that it is everywhere but it is a huge part of our history and country. Deciding who our next President is is a huge decision. Having the candidates on line helps get their views out there and attracts a younger audience. I think it is really making our generation more involved in politics and understanding what a huge right it is to vote.
I'm not a big fan of this for 2 reasons. 1) It's the continued commercialization of the internet. As I have stated before, I view the internet primarily as a source of entertainment or escapism. For that reason and the fact that authenticity can't always be guranteed, I think it's a bad idea. 2) Politics seems to be more and more of a popularity contest every year. I don't care to see a candidate on my favorite humor show or website. I want answers and solutions to what ails this country, not "cool" factor. I do support the candidates putting information on their websites because that is a great place to find out raw information that isn't "packaged for a news piece". But campaigning online is an entirely different thing.
While some of the campaigning has been a little overkill, I think it is to be expected the way the media turns everything into a circus act.
Then again, I'm very much guilty of keeping up with every tid bit of the election, even from my VCast phone. As for YouTube, I'm a big fan of it, as well. I don't always have time to watch speeches live, and YouTube really helps me fill in any gaps.
I think it is important for the internet to be used especially for something that is so important to our country. I remember when MTV started promoting for young people to vote, which helped a little. Like Erin said having the speeches online is helpful especially when you have a busy schedule and can’t sit in front of a TV all day. It is important for our generation to be following politics and if having stuff on youtube or on their official websites helps in the effort I think it is a great thing! However, like Josh stated, there are websites out there that may not have the correct information and someone could make the wrong choice based on this, so it is critical that people know the sources of the information they are reading.
