You'd think the NY Times was following my syllabus with how these stories keep coming up just in time.
A little background on the author, Mark Bittman is a very respected cookbook writer and food columnist for the NY Times. I think this story is so interesting because it's not about some pasty faced loser who can't stop gaming. It's about a real person with a real job and a real life that is trying to figure out how to break free from his electronic ties. CMC and ICT are like chains. They connect us, free us, and tie us down.
It's only going to get worse for your generation!! Trust me, we are not at the end of the beginning of ICT at work.

I am pretty sure many of us feel this way. If I can not find my cell phone, I feel lost from the world (even though I probably wouldn't be receiving many calls or texts). I feel lost when the internet is down and I can't check facebook every 3 hours. Technology has taken over our lives; and more than we think. I can't imagine not having the internet to communicate or my cell phone. Those things are inventions only to help us, but sometimes we feel as though life would completely end without them. Well, life existed before all of those were created, right?
I think its so crazy how technology has consumed us! Its just the smallest things like if you car breaks down, what would you do without a cell phone? and what the heck did our parents do in the 60's and 70's when their cars broke down? It is almost impossible to picture a world without the technologies we have today. We feel so cut off from society, when in actuality, only a very small portion of our lives has consisted of such amenities. Also things like email, what would we do in a corporate world without emails or even telephone confrences? I definitely think since we live in such a technoligical advanced time, we take advantage of the more simple things in life. Sure, I completely agree with Mark in the article. I am the same way when it comes to the newest cell phones and of course me as a young adult I use facebook to keep touch with friends. But like erin said, there was a life before our technologies, we just are too used to this lifestyle, its becoming far too easy to rely on batteries to run your life!
I can really realte with the cell phone thing. If I don't have my cell phone i feel naked or extremely isolated all day. On the otherhand, I have tried to make it a priority that I put my phone on silent for at least one hour out of each day to try and achieve normalcy outside of the new technology. It is great that out technology is advancing but we need to keep in mind the importance of face to face communication and quiet times when we don't have our phones to our ears or we aren't bumping into people on campus from texting and walking at the same time!!! That gets on my nerves so bad, and then I caught myself doing it!! haha
I defintly agree with the above comments. I feel very lost without my cell phone. I sometime refer to mysefl as a myspace addict. I find myself constantly checking to see if someone has called/text or if I have any messages online. It is nice though when you accidently leave your phone at home for the day. I never felt so dependent on the internet until I left home. While I was at home my cell was my life...that is how I chose to keep in touch with people. Even as Mark said about the simpler technologies...like when the electricity goes out, we flip out. Its like what do you do?
