This is an introduction to Second Life and this is the article that talks about people working on Second life. Both of these should give you a bit of an introduction to Second Life before our class on Tuesday.
See you then!!!

After reading the article, I understand what second life is a little better. I was one of those who was clueless when it was brought up.
Honestly, I don't really see a point in second life except for pure entertainment. I guess if companies such as Toyota, Calvin Klein, and Kraft want to get involved, then they must see an advertising and marketing opportunity there, if nothing else.
The whole concept of second life is strange to me but still entertaining. I could see something like this becoming addicting as well.
I've played around with SL some in the past, but I actually found it to be really hard to get into. I think you really need a lot of time to devote in order to become really interested in it.
Since people do take it so seriously, it was hard for me to use it as a novelty because all new characters are seen as "newbies," and unless you really have time to devote, it seems difficult to make home in this virtual world.
It's like Sims in the sense that your avatars have jobs and responsibilities, but unlike Sims, you can't just sign up for a job and the computer do all the work for you. It's reality in a virtual world.
Every character has a person behind the computer screen, and that actually makes me feel uncomfortable - not anonymous like one of the articles implied.
Second Life was a foreign concept to me until this class. Even until Tuesday I really had no idea what it was. I don’t really understand what the big deal is. People can take jobs, shop, and even have sex on Second Life but what true joy does this bring someone. To me I would rather do these things myself not spend the time and money letting an Aviator do it for me.
I also think it is crazy that companies like American Apparel, Calvin Klein, and even Wells Fargo are on Second life. It seems like a great marketing scheme if people really bought or invested with these companies. I find it interesting that in a materialistic society we make a virtual world that doesn’t crave the ‘must have more’ attitude.
Second life was foreign to me before this class. I really just dont see myself getting into a virtual world. I know that I spend a lot of time on my my space, but I could never spend the time needed for second life. I have never tried any of the other virtual worlds just because I have never been interested in that sort of thing.
I didnt really see any of the different companies that were on second life, but I do think it is crazy that companies think of that as good advertisement. I know I would never see the advertisments put up on there if that is the only place a company chose to advertise.
